Our history and future
Harmony started small.
The Harmony program was founded in 2008 as the wheat sustainability program of Mondelēz International. The program started with just a handful of farmers near Nantes, France, with the aim of protecting the environment and biodiversity, while supporting farmers.
Collaboration has always been Harmony’s Core.
Harmony practices were developed in partnership with farmers, cooperatives, millers, NGOs, and environmental experts. This collaboration continued as Harmony was revised and expanded over time to include farmers across 9 European countries – France, Spain, Italy, Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary, Belgium, Germany, Slovakia.
Harmony continues to be future looking.
In 2023, the Harmony program was expanded in scope to include climate change mitigation practices, recognizing climate change as a critical issue facing farmer livelihoods and the security of our food system. In 2026, Harmony was formalized into a publicly available, third-party certification scheme, once again growing the impact by opening to any interested farmer, cooperative, miller, or brand in the industry.
As part of the adaptation of Harmony into a formal certification scheme, ownership has been transferred to the ProTerra Foundation, to support the robust and credible management and operation of the certification.
